Frequently Asked QuestionsState Requirements QuestionsWhat are the Continuing Education requirements? INDIANA In July of 2006, the legislature allowed the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA) to establish the expiration date of their professional licenses without the need for an administrative rule change. At this time, the IPLA made the decision to change the expiration of appraiser licenses from January 1, 2008 to June 30, 2008. Before this, licenses were only valid for a period of two years. Due to the license expiration change, it extended the validity of their appraiser license for a period of six months for this renewal period only. After June 30, 2008, licenses will continue to expire on June 30 of every even-numbered year. During a typical two year renewal period, licensees are required to obtain 28 hours of continuing education (14 per year). Because this renewal cycle was six months longer, the ASC recently informed Indiana that they would need to ensure that they prorate the continuing education hours of Indiana appraisers. Therefore, any appraiser renewing their license in 2008 would have 35 hours of continuing education. These 35 hours would reflect the standard 28 hours from the two year license cycle plus seven hours due to the six month license extension. This is not an increase in continuing education hours, only a clarification of how the hours are calculated. ILLINOIS Real Estate Appraisers are required to take 28 hours of continuing education (CE) by September 30 of every odd ending year per renewal period (2 years). Of the 28 hours, only 21 hours can be taken online. The USPAP Update course may only be taken in the classroom. MICHIGAN Real Estate Appraisers are required to complete 28 hours of continuing education for the two-year renewal cycle. Please make sure you retain records of your continuing education. Limited appraisers must complete 14 hours of continuing education during their 3rd and successive years. All others must complete continuing education after their first renewal. IOWA Real Estate Appraisers are required to take 28 hours of CE every two years before June 30 of year in which the appraisers’ certificate expires. Up to 14 hours of CE can be taken online. WISCONSIN Effective 2007, Real Estate Appraisers are required to complete 28 hours of CE by December 14, of every odd year in the biennial renewal period. Appraisers initially Credentialed in the second year of the biennium must complete only 14 hours of CE which must include the 7 hour National USPAP Update course. Are there any specific courses required? MICHIGAN All licensees who are required to complete continuing education must complete the 7-hour National USPAP Update course for every renewal and the 2-hour Michigan Law & Rules course every other renewal. ILLINOIS A minimum of 7 hours of continuing education pertaining to Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) must be completed each renewal period (2 years) in the classroom only.
